The Batemans Bay Youth Foundation hosted an inspirational presentation function at the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club on Thursday 18 January 2024.

Eighty special guests, including family members congratulated eight students from four local high schools who received grants of $3,500 to assist them in making the transition to living away from home.

On receiving their grant each student gave a short speech outlining their tertiary education plans, their accommodation plans and how the grant would be used to support their transition to tertiary study. Each student story was unique in many aspects. Hamish will be studying Prosthetics and Orthotics at the University of the Sunshine Coast after learning about this important medical support while on school work experience. Two students will be attending the National Arts School in Sydney after presentation of their portfolios.

Two Excellence Prizes named after the late Chairman Alex Taylor OAM, and the retired Chairman Peter Wood OAM were also presented. Each prize of $1,000 is paid for excellent scholastic performance in the first year of university, restricted to Grantees of the previous year.

The prizes were awarded to Emma Moses, studying for a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Wollongong, who achieved 3 high distinctions, 3 distinctions in her first year. She also received the Nieve Blackman received the Vice Chancellor Leadership Scholarship for her achievement of a high distinctions and 4 distinctions studying Psychology at Charles Sturt University in Port Macquarie. Nieve also was awarded a Dean’s Award by the university for her efforts

Tara Doran entertained the gathering with an address about her experiences during her year at Macquarie University studying Education.

The BBYF was established in 1994 for the purpose of providing financial assistance to students leaving high school to pursue personal development and advancement in an unlimited range of worthwhile fields of endeavour. It is supported by a partnership between Batemans Bay Rotary, RSL and Soldiers Club.

Grants

University

BBYF grants assist students starting University with accommodation, travel, technology, books and equipment. To be eligible you need to enrol in a course of study at an Australian university or college on a full-time basis. Currently the grants are worth $3500.

TAFE and Tertiary College

BBYF grants can assist students with the cost of studying at TAFE or a Tertiary College with accommodation, travel, technology, cost of tools, uniforms and personal safety items. The amounts granted vary depending on individual circumstances. These grants are also available to students entering an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Other

The BBYF can assist you to complete training in your chosen career that might not include University, TAFE or a Tertiary College. The amounts granted vary depending on your circumstances and proposed study schedule.

Selection Process

Application open in September each year to schools. BBYF works with local schools to ensure that students are aware of the grants and that applications close on 30 November.

The Application Form requires details of family finances, school results, aspirations, interests, course to be studied and preferred tertiary institution.

Any student whose normal place of residence is in the area that is bounded by North Durras (north), Nelligen (west) and the Moruya River (south) and who is completing his or her secondary education (whether year 12 or earlier) or is pursuing an apprenticeship or traineeship, is eligible to apply if it is their intention to undertake in the following year:

  • a course of study at an Australian university or college of higher learning on a full-time basis; or
  • a traineeship or apprenticeship involving attendance at TAFE or other college or where the student may be required to provide “tools of trade” and/or special clothing; or
  • any other form of personal development including, but not restricted to, music, art, sport, invention or research.

Applications are considered by a Selection Committee on the basis of:

  • financial need of applicant and family;
  • perceived future potential of the applicant; and
  • relevant performance at school.

The scores from each Committee member are averaged and a panel is appointed to conduct interviews. By this method awards for the year are determined, the number being in accordance with funds available.

Applications for study grants close on 30 November each year. Applications for apprenticeship/traineeship grants may be lodged throughout the year.

Students undertaking a GAP YEAR are eligible to apply for a grant in the year immediately prior to recommencing studies.
